Now around here we like to add some extra layers of spookily perfect learning to our crafting. So our crafts often have STEAM components. It could be there is a bit of fun science, an engineering challenge, maybe some math measurements, a technological component, or we elevate with a bit of art! No matter what, we want to go beyond just crafting and create valuable, exciting and innovative learning opportunities for Halloween.
For all of these ideas, click on the links to get more details on the projects and STEM ideas we incorporated into our lessons.

Colorful No Carve Pumpkin Craft Ideas
If you are looking for a fun crafting project decorating pumpkins without carving them, try this Melted Crayon Pumpkin Art project. The results are beautiful and kids love the process art involved in this crafting. All you need is pumpkins, crayons and a hairdryer.
Or, if you want to have a LOT of fun incorporating power tools (not scary at all… right?), try Pumpkin Pomanders! I had a LOT of fun making the tutorial video for this project.
Mystical Paper Jack-o’-Lanterns
This is a quick and easy craft that is perfect for younger students.
You will need: Orange and green construction paper, scissors, and glue.
Have your students cut the orange paper into strips to form the pumpkin’s body. Then cut a few smaller green strips that we will use for the stalk.
Now, loop the orange strips and arrange them to create the pumpkin shape. Once you have a nice shape, overlap the tops and glue them together, then loop a piece of green construction paper through and glue it closed to make the stalk.
You can add a pipe cleaner or piece of string and hang these around the classroom, or place a battery operated tea light inside and set them around the room where they can cast a ghostly glow!
We will be sharing a crafting tutorial on our YouTube Channel shortly for this project. Subscribe to the STEAM Powered Family YouTube Channel be notified once it is uploaded.
Fun Traditional Animation Crafts
Let’s get old school this Halloween by making a Thaumatrope, one of the original animation toys. We provide all the templates for your Halloween Thaumtropes, plus some blanks for making your own. This easy STEM craft for Halloween is so much fun!
Playing with Eerie Perspective Art
Making Agamographs is quite a simple process as we provide all the Halloween Agamograph printable templates for your students, so all they need to do is cut and assemble. The real thrill comes from when students move and change their perspective and see how the images change as they move.
Create a Spooky Tunnel Art Craft
Your kids will love making this Halloween Tunnel Art Craft that brings their art work to life! Tunnel art is a way of building up art images through layers to create a 3D effect that results in the perception of depth. When you look at this spooky craft, it feels like you could jump right in!
Haunted House Silhouettes
In this crafting project we are adding in some engineering with a Build a Haunted House Challenge. All you need is some orange and black construction paper, colored tissue paper (parchment or wax paper works too), scissors, glue, and white chalk or black markers.
Now we get to have fun! Kids can play with their paper to construction spooky standing houses (you can do it flat too, but standing houses is a bigger challenge!). Ask students to try different shapes and techniques to make their houses. Don’t forget to get creative with crooked chimneys, windows, and ghostly silhouettes.
For an extra level, why not tie in the concepts of a Shadow Puppet Theatre, and see what spooky shadows can be see in their house?
Use the white chalk or black marker to create details like ghosts or cobwebs around the house. This project is great for discussing silhouettes and exploring light and color.
Creepy Dough Monsters
This is a fun craft that involves some sensory play and fine motor skills. Creating Creepy Clay Monsters can be done with air-dry clay, playdough, or we did our Halloween Monsters with homemade salt dough. Sculpt the monsters by using cookie cutters, playdough tools, clay sculpting tools, or even simple craft sticks. Then break out the crafting bin and encourage your kids to use pipe cleaners, googly eyes, paint and other crafting supplies to make their monsters extra creepy and awesome!
This activity allows for a lot of personal expression and can be connected to a lesson about textures and sculpture. We will be sharing our whole project shortly! Join our mailing list to get notified once it is available.
Toilet Roll Spooky Crafts with Circuits
In this activity you can make either a Bat, a Mummy or some other creative design imagined by your students. Start with recycled toilet rolls, then use paint and construction materials to create your designs. You can stop there with your Halloween TP Crafts, or add some glowing eyes with simple circuits like we did!
DIY Halloween Card Crafts
If your kids would like to make cards to give to their friends and family this Halloween, try this Halloween Card crafting project where part of the card spins when it opens and gives your friends a fright!
Witch’s Potion Bottles
This is a fun activity that doubles as a sensory jar making project. We created a Spellbinding Witches Jar, but your kids can make whatever inspires them this holiday season.
All you need is some empty, clean bottles or jars (they need a lid), food coloring, water, oil (vegetable, baby, any really works), glitter and small spooky items (the dollar store is a great place to find things!).
Students fill the bottles with water mixed with food coloring, a bit of oil (this helps with the floating effect), and throw in some glitter and small items for an extra magical touch. Close the top tightly. You can seal the lids with glue if you wish. Then encourage kids to get creative and label their potions with names like “Dragon’s Breath” or “Invisibility Juice”. This craft is a wonderful way to incorporate a little science and sensory play into your Halloween festivities.
Wand Crafting Project
Make magic this Halloween with a wand craft that lights up! Creating a simple circuit, kids will craft a wand with the ability to light up and turn off with a simple flick of their thumb! Perfect for your little witches and wizards.
These creepy crafts are not only a way to celebrate Halloween but also integrate educational concepts in a playful and engaging way that kids love. By bringing these creative projects into your classroom, you’re helping to foster a joy-filled learning environment that students will remember for years to come. Happy crafting and Happy Halloween!
