An Out of the Box Ice STEM Engineering Challenge

It’s summer time and the weather is finally warm after months and months of icy, snowy cold winter. So what did we spend the last week playing with? Ice! I know, it seems crazy, but it was so much fun and if you live somewhere insanely warm it makes it a race against the melt!

I’m a big fan of Groovy Lab in a Box. They are a monthly subscription service that delivers a complete STEM unit study to your door. It is one of the most complete and comprehensive learning subscription boxes we have ever tried (and we’ve tried lots!). They refer to the program as Academics in a Box and that is a great description. When they asked if I would like to try this month’s box, What’s the Matter? I jumped at the chance. Although I was gifted this box, all thoughts, pictures and experiences are my own.

When our box arrived it was packed full of everything we would need to do our challenges. The theme was states of matter with the activities focused on working with ice. Now the one thing this box on ice STEM challenges didn’t include was a freezer! We had molds tucked everywhere trying to get them to freeze so we could do all the projects. Due to limited freezer space we ended up spreading out the work over about a week. It would have been so much easier to do this in the winter when I could just set everything outside and let it freeze!

Perfect for homeschoolers and young scientists, with everything you need in one box.As a homeschooler I’m always looking for ways to streamline our science studies and make my life a little easier with our lesson plans. Groovy is perfect because each box is a complete unit study. The guide book has lots of fantastic information (my oldest loved reading about how the molecules change their organization as they change states), plus we are able to take our studies further by going to their exclusive Beyond the Box section where they have articles, videos, games and more.

In our studies of ice STEM we did a number of really cool activities including exploring density and displacement, and making an ice lantern.

Perfect for homeschoolers and young scientists, with everything you need in one box.One of the activities was like a magic trick. It was absolutely fascinating to watch. The copper wire went through the block of ice but it refroze behind the wire. It was like the wire was moving through the ice by magic instead of cutting through it. The top was perfectly intact and smooth. Very cool!

Perfect for homeschoolers and young scientists, with everything you need in one box.My favourite part about Groovy Lab in a Box is how it teaches you so much about a subject but inspires young STEMists to create and use their imaginations. For one of the activities we took a basic idea from the book, but made it bigger and better. Instead of a simple engineering structure build, we built our very own dinosaur ice sculpture!

Groovy Lab in a Box once again didn’t disappoint. The projects were fun, engaging and provided a great, in-depth unit study in a way that didn’t feel like work or school. If you are a homeschooler, have a budding young scientist or are looking for an exciting project for your kids to do over summer break, check out Groovy Lab in a Box and especially the ice STEM challenges in What’s the Matter?
