Like many people, we have become increasingly conscious of reducing our waste and contributions to the landfill. Although there is great value in many crafting projects as little kids master scissor skills and develop their fine motor strength and coordination. As my kids have grown I have been on a mission to find projects that not only interest them but also develop skills, without creating waste.

For us making bath bombs and soaps has become one of our favourite creative outlets. It is really amazing the creations your kids can come up with when it comes to making soaps. We’ve used soaps to learn about Layers of the Earth, the Oceans and Sharks, polymers with Soap Jelly, plus explore passions like Harry Potter.

Plus it encourages kids to wash their hands more frequently when they have made the soap themselves.

And they make amazing kid made gifts.

Best of all, you can make soaps in almost any theme your kids can think of, especially if you can find a silicone mold.

In our latest project we used a silicone mold we had purchased for making Spider Man bath bombs, but this time we made super powered soaps!

Is anyone else’s spidey senses tingling?

Spider Man Soaps Recipe and Supplies

Melt and pour clear soap base cut into cubes (each cube is approx. 1 ounce)
Red soap coloring
Black mica powder
Black cosmetic biodegradable glitter
1 teaspoon of orange essential oil (or use your favourite)
Spray bottle of rubbing alcohol
Spider Man silicone mold
1 microwave safe measuring cups
Small paintbrush

*A NOTE ON GLITTER – Glitter has become very controversial due to the negative impacts on the environment, but I know many of you still love a little sparkle in your projects! When it comes to glitter, I believe it is always optional. None of my projects require it. But if you decide you do want a little sparkle and shine in your creations, I highly recommend using a biodegradeable glitter. There are lots of fantastic options available.

SPIDER MAN SOAP DIRECTIONS

HOW TO MAKE SPIDER MAN SOAPS

Add 15 cubes of the soap base to a microwave measuring cup and melt soap cubes in 30 second intervals, stirring after each interval, until completely melted. Don’t let it boil.

Add essential oil, colour and glitter to the melted soap base. Mix everything together. If the color is not dark enough, add 1/2-1 teaspoon and stir until desired color is achieved.

Spray the bottom of mold with rubbing alcohol to prevent bubbles from forming on the bottom (which will be Spider Man’s face, and he doesn’t want bubbles on his face!

Pour the soap mixture into the mold. Spray the top of the mixture with rubbing alcohol to prevent bubbles from forming on the top.

Allow it to harden completely before popping the soaps from the mold. I usually let them set for about 2 hours or overnight.

HOW TO DECORATE SPIDER MAN SOAPS

We have done a few bath bombs that allowed the kids to paint and decorate their creations. They love using these as a canvas for their imaginations. Bringing that over to our soap creations proved to be a big success!

In a small container, add a pinch of black mica and a few squirts of alcohol and mix.

Using a small paint brush with a pointed end, dab the mica/alcohol mixture and paint the eyes. Sprinkle glitter while it is still wet if you want a bit of extra sparkle. Allow it to dry for about 30 minutes.

Store in an airtight container until ready for use,
