Kits & Gifts For Young Makers
Water Garden Aquarium – This creative product from Back To The Roots combines aquaculture (raising aquatic animals) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil), in a closed loop ecosystem. My kids have been asking for a new pet and this gift idea will give them the chance to not only assemble the system, but then grow both plants and fish. Making can also involve growing!
Hydraulic Machines 4-in-1 Wooden Kit – This kit teaches young makers how to bring life to their creations by applying hydraulics! Many products will encourage kids to build, but this highly rated product incorporates not only engineering skills but also the power of water pressure. Once kids master the concepts in this kit, they will be prepared to step out on their own and make their own unique hydraulic powered pieces.
Leonardo da Vinci Catapult Kit – When looking for gifts for young makers, you really can’t go wrong with inspiration from one of the greatest makers ever: Leonardo da Vinci. This kit teaches how to build a catapult using da Vinci’s own designs and plans from 1485. Once kids have built this piece, they can use their new knowledge to create new catapult designs and become more skilled makers. Or just have tons of fun launching items to see how far they fly!
3D Metal Art Brain Teaser Dragon Flame Puzzle – This brand new product looks simply stunning! Using laser cut metal pieces, assemble the 3D puzzle to create a stunning dragon. Older children should be able to do it themselves, but those under 10 years old may require some adult assistance. Either way, this is a gorgeous engineering project!
Makey Makey – Makey Makey has been on our list for a couple of years. Using every day objects like bananas make your own keyboard or instrument. It’s a great kit for inspiring young makers with thousands of possibilities. Highly rated and recommended this open ended creation tool kit will inspire young and old. Makey Makey should be on every young makers wish list!
Snap Circuits – It’s no secret, we LOVE our Snap Circuits around here. If there is one kit every elementary aged kid should have, this is it. There are many different types of kits, so you can pick one that suits your child’s interests and ability level. They go together quickly and easily, with an instruction booklet full of ideas. But it won’t stop there, once kids have figured out how to create circuits, the possibilities are endless as they begin creating their own circuits that light up, buzz, set things flying and more! It’s not just us, check out the thousands of 5 star reviews.
Lego – What can’t you build with Lego? During our many creations, builds and make it sessions, the one thing that comes out regularly is Lego. From building bases for things like our Circuit-Tree to learning about gears with Technic. You really can’t go wrong with Lego as a gift for young makers.
Tinker Toys – Tinker Toys are another basic that all young makers needs to help them on their creative journey. They connect easily and are great for teaching engineering skills. They are also very handy while making and creating, such as when we needed to build a launchpad for our bottle rockets.
GeckoBot – GeckoBot is another new product on the market and it immediately caught my eye. My boys love geckos and would have a blast building a gecko that could actually climb walls, windows and other vertical surfaces. While building this kit kids learn a great physics lesson in air-pressure, suction and surface texture. Plus, it’s kind of cute!
Magic Science for Wizards Only Kit – This combines something kids love, science and magic! The experiments in the kit produce results that are like magic, but it teaches the science behind them so kids can reproduce the results. Unique and fun, this kit is sure to wow your little wizard makers.

Gifts For Young Makers That Keep On Giving
Groovy Lab In A Box – This subscription box set for young STEMists is a fantastic program with each month offering a unique, in-depth study of a different topic. The projects involve a little science, a little math and lots of engineering to keep your little makers busy learning and creating.
Creation Crate – One of our favourite monthly subscription boxes, this kit is best done with students in upper elementary or older. Even adults love this monthly maker box series. Younger children may need adult assistance to do the builds, but it’s so worth it. Such fantastic projects that build knowledge on circuits, programming and more. A very unique program.
