Making the chocolate shells

Heat the white candy melts in a medium glass bowl in the microwave for 1 minute at 50% power. Stir well, and continue heating in 30 second intervals until the wafers are fully melted and smooth/creamy.

Place the silicone sphere mold on a flat serving tray or baking sheet (this makes it easier to move around), and spoon approximately a tablespoon of the melted candy wafers into the molds. Thoroughly coat the inside of the mold with a small silicone spatula, or the back of a spoon. Make sure to make the edges a little thicker, so that they don’t break when melding together. If the candy is pooled at the bottom, spread again to evenly coat all sides, or your sphere will be less circular, and more flat on the bottoms from the pooled candy.

Place the filled mold in the refrigerator for 3-5 minutes to set.

HP Hot Chocolate Bomb Mold

Creating the hot chocolate bombs

Once set, remove from the refrigerator, and begin slowly pulling the mold away from the spheres on the sides first, and then lightly push from the bottom to remove them. Place them on a piece of parchment paper. Try to handle them as little as possible to avoid fingerprints, or melting. (To reduce fingerprint smudges, wear food safe gloves). Also, ensure your hands are completely clean and dry.

Warm a small plate in the microwave for 20 seconds. Or you can place a small pan on the stove over a low heat to warm it a bit. You just want it slightly warmed. Not hot!

Place a white sphere open side down onto the plate. Twist it a little to get the edges slightly melted, and then immediately flip back over and fill with a heaping tablespoon of hot cocoa mix, about 10-12 miniature marshmallows, and approximately a teaspoon of sprinkles.

The sprinkles give it an extra burst of chocolate when making your hot chocolate!

HP Hot Cocoa Bomb Fill

Place another sphere on the plate and twist, and once the edges are slightly melted, place it on top of the filled sphere. Twist slightly to help meld them together. If you have any cracks that didn’t seal, heat a spoon in hot water, dry thoroughly, and use it to smooth around the seam.

Repeat this process to make all 3 hot cocoa bombs.

Now we decorate!

This is the step where our hot chocolate bombs become truly magical! Plus kids learn some incredible kitchen skills they can apply to other baking projects in the future.

Create piping bags

Add 1 black candy melt to the red candy melts bowl, in order to turn the red a slightly darker shade. Place the ¼ c of red candy melts in the microwave, and repeat step 1 to fully melt.

Place the ¼ c of yellow candy melts in the microwave next, and repeat the melting process.

Once both the red and yellow are both smooth/creamy, drape a sandwich bag over your hand, and fill with the melted red wafers. Repeat with a second bag and the yellow wafers.

Cut just a small bit off the corner to create a small hole. This will work like a piping bag. The smaller the hole the more precise you can be.

HP Hot Chocolate Bomb Piping

Decorate the top of the hot chocolate bomb

Pipe red lines first, and then yellow lines on the top of the hot cocoa bombs. Immediately add sprinkles. Let set for 2-3 minutes.

Create Harry Potter inspired decorations

While the cocoa bombs are setting, use a marker to make the eyeglasses and lightening bolt shape. Once you have it perfect, place a piece of parchment paper over the glasses/lightning bolt template. Trace the lightning bolt with the melted yellow candy melts in the bag. Ensure you make the lightning bolt thick, or they will break when handling them.

While the lightning bolts are setting, heat the ¼ c black candy melts in the microwave, and repeat step 1 to fully melt. Drape the last sandwich bag over your hand, and fill with the melted black candy.

Cut a very small tip of the bag, and trace the eyeglasses template with the black candy. Again, be sure to make the lines thick, so that they won’t break when handling. Outline the lightning bolts with the black candy also. (I tested using the lightning bolt with just yellow, but it was hard to see, and blended in a bit too much. Outlining them with the black really helped make them “pop”.) Place the parchment paper on a flat surface (cutting board, serving platter, baking sheet), and place in the freezer to set for 3-5 minutes.

HP Homemade Decorations

Adding the Magical decorations

Once the eyeglasses and lightning bolt have set, remove them from the freezer.

Return the red candy melts bowl to the microwave for 15 seconds, as you should have a small amount leftover in your bowl. Stir well, and using a toothpick, or other small utensil, add a small amount of the red melted candy to the back of one of the eyeglasses, and place it on one of the hot chocolate bombs.

Next, add a small amount of the red melted candy to the back of a lightning bolt, and place it above the eyeglasses on the cocoa bomb.

Repeat this process until all three cocoa bombs have eyeglasses and lightning bolts. Let set for 2-3 minutes.

Harry Potter Hot Chocolate Bombs

Drinking Magical HP Hot Chocolate Bombs

When you’re ready to enjoy your Harry Potter Hot Chocolate Bombs, heat approximately 8oz of milk in the microwave, or on the stovetop. Place your hot chocolate bomb in a mug, and slowly pour the milk over it. Stir lightly to open the bomb and see the hot chocolate and sprinkles explode. Continue stirring until the candy melts and cocoa mix have melted and blended into your drink. Enjoy!

Tips

While handling the spheres, wearing food safe gloves will help keep them from melting, and also minimize your fingerprints on them.

If you are having a hard time getting the two spheres to connect to each other, you could pipe some extra melted candy wafers along the seam and dip in sprinkles.

To melt the sphere edges, you can either use heated plates, or a lightly heated frying pan. I have used both, and both are equally effective.

These will keep for up to 2 weeks if kept in an airtight container in a cool dry place, or up to a month in the refrigerator, but the coloring may change slightly from being refrigerated.

If you have thin spots in your shells, your bombs may prematurely break. Ensure when you are making your shells they are nice and thick all over. One trick is to hold the silicone mold up by a window and look for any thin spots while filling the molds.
