Directions

In a large mixing bowl, add the baking soda, citric acid, Epsom salts, arrowroot powder and kaolin clay. Mix dry ingredients together. Be cautious with this step around younger kids as the citric acid can be irritating if it gets airborne. And their chaotic pouring and stirring and send it puffing up into the air.

In a microwave safe measuring cup add the coconut oil and avocado butter oil. Melt in short spurts in the microwave until just liquid. Add the essential oils. Mix the liquids together.

Add the liquids to the dry mix bowl. Using your hands mix everything together really well. As you mix you will feel the consistency change. You want it to feel like wet sand and clump when you squish it or press it.

Mix in the rainbow nonpareils.

Add the mixture to the cube mold, filling to the top and packing down firmly. Allow the molds to sit undisturbed in a warm dry place to set up and harden. This will take approximately 48 hours. Tap the cubes to feel if they are nice and hard before trying to remove them from the mold. If you try to remove them too early, they will break.

To release the bath bomb cubes, gently twist the silicone mold like an ice cube tray. When the cubes begin to lift out, pull gently to remove them.

Make sure they are stored in an airtight container until you are ready for bath time.

Now add to a warm bath and enjoy!

The Science of Bath Bombs

If you have been following our bath bomb making journey you know this recipe is a little different. We love experimenting with our recipes!

First up, we need to explain the bath time eruptions. The bath bomb fizz is caused by an acid-base reaction between citric acid and baking soda. To trigger the chemical reaction, we need to add warm water.

For our regulars, you probably noticed a new ingredient, Arrowroot Powder. Arrowroot powder is used in the place of cornstarch as a stabilizing agent. It is also a fantastic ingredient for making Arrowroot Oobleck!

Also missing from this recipe is Polysorbate 80, an emulsifier we use in most of our bath bomb recipes. In this recipe we do not need to use it, because we are not using any colorants! So if you have concerns or don’t have any polysorbate 80, simply make your bath bombs white and you are all good leaving it out of the recipe.

Coconut oil and the butters (no matter which one you chose to use), help make our bath bombs hard and not crumbly. Kaolin clay can also help with structure and sturdiness, which is especially helpful when using silicone molds to make bath bombs.

Happy Bath Bomb Making with your Kids!
