What is Floam Slime?

Floam is fluffy slime with styrofoam beads, together they create this amazingly playable and satisfying floam slime.

I don’t know what it is about that feeling of it crunching and popping as you play, but it is incredibly calming and satisfying. Plus so much fun!

For this recipe we went with a unicorn inspired floam slime. It uses beautiful, sparkly colours, and a wonderful scent. Making it one of the nicest slimes to play with that we have ever made. It ranks right up there with the crystal slime I love so much.

Unicorn Floam Slime Ingredients

We’ve made fluffy slime before and it is a lot of fun.  Although I do find I need to be very careful picking the shaving cream as most of them cause me to develop skin reactions. I know some people say just grab cheap shaving cream from the dollar store, but I would advise against that, especially for those with sensitive skin. Normally shaving cream is used for only a short time before being rinsed off, if you child is playing with this, you want something gentle for extended use.

3 cups of foam shaving cream (not the gel kind)
1 ¼ cups of clear or white school glue
1 teaspoon baking soda
10 drops citrus essential oil
2 teaspoons contact solution
2-3 drops of food coloring
2 tablespoons of glitter
1 cup foam beads

Pro Tip! Struggling with your slime making? If you live in the USA Elmers now has their very own slime activator, Magical Liquid, that works with their glue! I haven’t been able to find this outside the USA yet, but I’ve heard good things from American readers. So if you are struggling, give it a try!

Crunchy Floam Slime Recipe Directions

Add glue and baking soda to a large bowl and mix well.

Add essential oil and blend.

This next step may require you use an extra sturdy spoon. It is stiff and tough to stir. Add the shaving cream and start mixing until the mixture is nice and fluffy.

Now is the time to add food colouring. Start with a couple of drops, blend, then add two more. Repeat until you get the desired colouring.

Add the contact solution and mix in very thoroughly. When the slime begins to come away from the bowl, the stickiness is leaving, and it is ready to knead. You may need to add a bit more of the contact solution if it remains sticky. On a flat surface, knead slime until nice and smooth and pliable.

Now it’s time to add in our glitter and foam beads! Make a little impression in the slime and add the glitter and beads into the impression. Now carefully start kneading and working it through the slime until it is completely blended.

Repeat for other colours, glitter colours and foam bead colours until you have a unicorn rainbow of crunchy floams to play with!

Crunchy Unicorn Floam Slime Variations

If you run into any issues, or just want to play, this recipe provides a huge amount of leeway in how it can be put together. You can use clear or white glue. You can add the colouring to the glue right at the beginning and see how it changes the colours. Also try adding the glitter and/or foam beads before adding the contact lens solution.

The great thing about slime making is that it is such a flexible process. You can do it in a lot of different ways and still get great results. The only thing you shouldn’t mess with is the baking soda and contact lens solution portions. If you mess those up, you will upset the chemical reaction and your slime will not work.

How To Store Crunch Floam Slime

To store your slime, simply place it in an airtight container like a mason jar.

Want MORE Crunch In Your Slime? (And why it crunches)

So what is causing that satisfying crunch as you play with this slime? It’s air bubbles being trapped in the slime. Adding foam beads helps create more air pockets to crunch as you play. Want to increase the crunch? Try adding a few more foam beads.

As a fun experiment try adding the foam beads at various stages of your slime making process to see which one creates the best crunch!
