What exactly is slime?
Slime is a polymer created through a chemical reaction. When we mix a plain old school glue and an activator (there are several to choose from) it becomes a new substance.
How? Polymers! A polymer is a substance that is made up of large molecules which are each made of smaller, repeating blocks known as monomers. Adding another substance to a polymer can rearrange or cross link the molecules forming new chains and making a new substance. You can see the change when the liquid glue and activator become a thicker and stretchy slime! This is a change in viscosity. Viscosity is the way we describe how fast or slow a liquid will move. So the thicker the liquid the slower it will flow!

What is Franken-Slime?
Quite simply, its a Halloween slime with all sorts of things added in to make the play more interesting! Like Frankenstein’s monster all sorts of things are combined to come up with an end project! Franken-Slime is a Halloween themed concoction that’s slimy, gooey, and just a bit spooky! One of the best parts is you can completely customize your slime to how you like it! Try some eerie colors, glowing features, or mix in creepy crawlies like plastic toys, eyeballs or bones to really bring it to life!
What do I need to make slime?
Ingredients
1 cup of white or clear school glue
1 tablespoon of baking soda
1½ tablespoons of contact lens solution (make sure it contains boric acid) or slime activator
Food coloring (green, purple, or orange for Halloween vibes)
1 cup of shaving cream (Optional – if you want a fluffier slime)
Glow-in-the-dark paint or pigment (optional if you want it to glow!)
Small plastic Halloween-themed items like spiders, skulls, teeth, eyeballs, or bats
Glitter (optional for an extra spooky sparkle)
How to make slime?
Instructions
Pour 1 cup of white glue into a large bowl. If you want your slime to glow, add a few drops of glow-in-the-dark paint or pigment to the glue at this stage – alternatively you could use glow in the dark glue! Check out our Glow in the Dark Slime Recipe for more details. If you’re using shaving cream mix it in here.
Another fun alternative is to use clear glue for your slime recipes.
Next, stir in food coloring. For extra creativity, make 3 batches of slime in three colors and combine them later for a multicolored effect.
Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda to the glue mixture and stir thoroughly. This will help the slime thicken as it begins to form.
Time to Activate the Slime! Add 1½ tablespoons of contact lens solution to the glue mixture and start stirring. As you mix, the slime will begin to pull away from the sides of the bowl and stick together. If it’s still too sticky, you can add a tiny bit more contact lens solution, but be careful not to add too much or it will become too firm.
Get hands on! Once the slime has formed, knead it with your hands for a few minutes until it reaches the perfect stretchy, slimy, gooey consistency.
Mix in some spooky Halloween fun! Add in your little Halloween items like spiders or eyeballs. You can also add some glitter for extra sparkle or leave it plain. Have fun!

Fun Ideas for your Halloween Slime
Sensory Play for Little Ones
Slime is a great Halloween sensory activity for younger children. They’ll love squishing the slime and exploring the different textures. You can even create a “slime sensory bin” by filling it with plastic eyeballs, skeleton bones, or mini pumpkins for a fully immersive Halloween experience.
Play an I spy game
“Can you find 5 bones?” – “ Find 3 Spiders” – “Find 2 eyeballs”. We did this fun Hide and Seek Oobleck for Halloween and it was a huge hit! Oobleck is similar to slime, but different. Doing a slime version where kids try to find items hidden in the slime would definitely be popular.
Spooky Slime Storage
Make some spooky storage for your slime – have the kids draw spooky pictures on a zip top plastic bag – if you made orange slime you could add a jack-o-lantern face, green – draw Frankenstein – purple – maybe some bats, a monster maybe. Then slip the slime inside for safe storage!
Slimy, spooky, fun! Try this Halloween slime. It is sure to bring out the spooky spirit in everyone. You can find fun slime recipes for all sorts of occasions! Check them out here at SPF!
