Leprechaun Rocks – Fun St. Patrick’s Day Chemistry Experiment

St. Patrick’s Day is such a fun holiday, it needs an equally fun activity. So this year we created Leprechaun Rocks! My kids love hatching dinosaur eggs so much, this was the perfect adaption for Leprechauns.

Last year we built a Leprechaun home, complete with a crystal rainbow. The rainbow was gorgeous and  by far my kids favourite part of the activity. They loved watching the crystallization process.

My kids also love a good chemistry experiment and a treasure hunt. What kid doesn’t love finding hidden treasure? That gold at the end of the rainbow is a topic of very animated conversations around here in March! My kids are always coming up with goofy stories about how they are going to find the end of the rainbow and claim all the gold.

So this year I decided to come up with something a little different. A story about how it’s not as easy as finding the end of the rainbow. Oh no, even if you get to the elusive end of the rainbow the Leprechauns are tricksters and hide their gold. Disguising it and making it a challenge for you to find and reveal.

Leprechaun rocks may look like any old rock but inside is all the Leprechaun’s treasures! And with the right secret ingredient you can open the rock and the treasure will be yours.

You should have seen the excitement! I sent the kids on a treasure hunt to find their rocks, then we set up the chemistry experiment. It was such a hit.

A fantastic way to get very hands on and even do some sensory play.
