The holidays are coming and that means it’s time for some fun and unique projects! This year we took one of our favourite recipes, Super Simple Play Dough Bubble Bath, and created a special candy cane edition. The kids love making these play dough recipes. They are quick, easy and the results perfect for gifting. My oldest exclaimed that these Candy Cane soaps smelled and looked good enough to eat! Eating them, however, is not recommended, so he settled for just washing with them. And boy did he smell good afterwards!

We decided to make two versions of our Candy Cane play dough. A soap version and a bubble bath version. Although similar there are a few differences in the process and ingredients. The best part, this activity is so forgiving. You can do with with preschoolers through high schoolers, and it makes a wonderful classroom project.

What you need to make Candy Cane Play Dough Soap

Peppermint scented Castile Soap (or you can use plain Castile soap and add your own peppermint scent)
Corn Starch
Coconut Oil
Red Colouring (we used this water colouring but you could use a quality food dye too. Use caution to prevent staining.)
Mixing Bowls
Spoons
Flat surface for rolling and shaping. Parchment paper is a great idea for containing the mess.

What you need to make Candy Cane Play Dough Bubble Bath

Bubble bath – pick one that gives lots of bubbles and is clear or white for best results. Also chose one with minimal scent or a mint scent like this one.
Peppermint essential oil (if needed)
Corn Starch
Coconut Oil (optional)
Red Colouring (either water colouring or quality food dye)
Mixing Bowls
Spoons
Flat surface for rolling and shaping. Parchment paper can be very helpful.

Directions for Candy Cane Play Dough Soap or Bubble Bath

The process for creating both of these products is very similar and extremely forgiving. Amounts provided are for guidance only. You do not need to be exact.

First take your soap or bubble bath and split approximately 1/2 cup between two bowls.

To one container add your red colouring and mix.

To both containers add 0.5 tsp of coconut oil. Heat the oil to liquefy it if necessary. Do not over use coconut oil as it can get slippery. Err on the side of less or you can leave it out completely, but we find in our very dry climate the oil is a luxurious addition.

Add the peppermint scent at this point if needed. Mix.

Starting with the container that does not have red colouring, start adding corn starch one teaspoon at a time. Mix it in, and continue adding and kneading it until you reach a nice play dough consistency. Set aside your white play dough.

Now repeat with the red play dough, adding corn starch until you reach a nice play dough consistency.

Once you have your red and white play dough simply roll it out into long snakes and twist together and shape into your candy cane.

We made our bubble bath ones about 2 inches long, the perfect size for one bath. To do this size we started with a marble sized piece of each colour.

For the soap we made two sizes. A bigger version that we could put in a soap dish and just break off pieces as needed. Plus a mini version. These were super cute and tiny and could be piled in a bowl so guests could take one per hand washing. These minis also made wonderful gifts! They are harder though for little hands to make.

For gifting, place in small plastic gift bags and tie with ribbons.
