Sticky fingers, mess everywhere and chaos reigns fueled by sugar highs. There’s always that one event that involves the kids making their own treats. It could be a camp or special day, but there is always one that includes an activity where the kids decorate their own cookies or cupcakes. Most of the time these are extremely messy affairs with the final products looking anything but edible, until now! We tried a new way of decorating cupcakes and the results were AH-MAZING! The kids loved it and are so proud of their creations.
So how does one make these stunning creations known as Marshmallow Cupcakes?

These cupcakes would be a fantastic activity at a birthday party, camp, classroom or end of year celebration. They are super simple and don’t cost much at all. Plus, think of the gorgeous pictures you could take of your group working on their creations?
To make these marshmallow cupcakes you will need:
Icing (and some method of spreading the icing)
Marshmallows (variety of sizes for creativity)
Jelly Beans or other candies
There are lots of different designs you can make and once kids start, it’s amazing the creations that come from their imaginations. We created geodes, flowers and dragon eggs.
Provide each child with a cupcake to ice. We tried both a tube application and a butter knife to spread the icing. The kids preferred to use a butter knife. Try not to let the icing get too thick, if necessary encourage eating of the extra icing. I know. So hard, right?
Next, using scissors, cut the marshmallows. Now depending on the design you will need to plan your cuts accordingly. We found cutting on an angle gave the best results for our designs. My boys loved creating this dragon egg design, complete with a jelly bean for the dragon. Yum!
After cutting the marshmallow squish it a bit, just gently, don’t go crazy! Just enough to open up the fresh sticky side. Now toss into a bag with your colored sugars and shake! The colored sugars will only stick to the newly cut side.
It can be easy to get excited and put too many cut marshmallows in the bag at once, this will cause the marshmallows to stick together. It’s best to do small batches for the shaking.
For an extra sparkly presentation, place some sugar on a plate and gently roll the top of the iced cupcake in the sugars.
Now arrange your marshmallows to create your masterpiece!
Kids love making these marshmallow cupcakes. The designs are stunning and so simple. Perfect for all ages and abilities.
