2017 is around the corner and many adults are thinking about their New Years Resolutions, but what about kids? Children benefit from having intentions and goals, just like adults do. New years resolutions for kids are a chance to think about what a child wants to do, how they want to grow, and to identify their priorities for 2017. This can be great information for us as their educators!
Why New Years Resolutions for Kids?
We know children learn best when they are engaged and feel they have some ownership over their learning. What better way to go into 2017 than knowing what they are passionate about and what goals they have for 2017?
By having kids share their New Years Resolutions, it gives us a snap shot of what they feel is important. We can then use this information to plan activities and programs for the year that include those things.
Perhaps you have a child that wants to spend more time with Grandma and Grandpa. Maybe they could do a history lesson that involves interviewing their grandparents to learn more about a historical event they lived through.
Maybe a child is interested in learning a new technology, like video production. Use that passion to bring in a layer of creativity and arts to their STEAM lessons. Have them create a video instead of the standard worksheets or written report.
What if they want to learn basketball this year? Not only could you incorporate basketball into their physical education and fitness programs, but what about creating a physics lesson based on basketball?
Not only are you incorporating input from the children into lesson plans, but you are also helping them learn how to achieve their own goals and fulfill their resolutions. To move into new phases of their lives with intention and purpose. To make real changes and improvements. Doing New Years Resolutions with kids will help them gain these vital skills.
