15 Spring STEM Holidays

Spring is finally coming! Although we had a ton of fun exploring Winter STEM we are now ready to celebrate spring! We have already shared our favourite Spring STEM Activities, so this time instead of focusing on activities we want to focus on holidays and dates to celebrate STEM this spring. And boy do we have some amazing reasons to celebrate! Check them out and start planning your Spring STEM Celebrations!

This list is a great way to plan your lessons and also look for events in your community or online that will help foster a love of learning by celebrating these STEM holidays. A few of these holidays may not be exactly STEM related but with a little creative thinking we turn them into a great way to do some STEM activities.

Pi Day

Yes, this is just before the official start of spring, but it is so close we decided to include it!

Who doesn’t love pie? Well in this case we are referring to Pi, the mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. It equals approximately 3.14 (although the number goes on and on!) and is represented by the symbol: π in mathematics and physics. We celebrate Pi Day and all things math on March 14 (3:14) every year.

Spring Equinox – March 19 – 21

This is the big kick off! Also known as the Vernal Equinox, the Spring Equinox marks the first time of year when day and night are equal (roughly 12 hours each). This only happens one other time during the year, for the Fall Equinox.

The Spring Equinox can occur anytime between March 19 and March 21 and is the official start of Spring in the Northern hemisphere.

World Water Day ~ March 22

Celebrate World Water Day by learning more about the science behind water. We have a number of water projects that are perfect for marking this important substance that sustains life all over the world.

How you can celebrate:

• Do a water lab to explore water quality.
• Tackle some Water STEM Projects.

NanoDays ~ March 25 – April 2

NanoDays is a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering and its potential impact on the future. Events are organized by participants in the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Network) and take place at more than 250 science and children’s museums, research centers and universities around the world.

How you can celebrate:

• Learn more about Nanotechnology with this informative video.
• For younger kids, check out the Crash Course video on Nanotechnology.
• Purchase your own nanotechnology kit to do experiments at home.

Mathematics Awareness Month ~ April  

This event’s goal is to increase public understanding of and appreciation for mathematics. It began in 1986 as Mathematics Awareness Week with a proclamation by President Ronald Reagan.

How you can celebrate:

• Create some fun STEM Games like Switchgrip Math Game.
• Run a lemonade stand or pretend to work in a restaurant for the day!
• Get hands on and book smart exploring the Pythagorean Theorem and the book, What’s Your Angle Pythagoras?

Caramel Day ~ April 5

Caramel Day is dedicated to the gooey, melt in our mouth, delicious creation created with some outstanding candy science and exploring the process of crystallization and caramelization.

Celebrate Caramel day by:

• Making Caramel of course! Learn all about the process of making caramel and how to make the most incredible, melt in your mouth blissfulness known as Caramel with our recipe. Warning, you can’t eat just one!

National Robotics Week

The goal of this event is to educate the public about how robotics technology impacts society, both now and in the future, as well as inspire students of all ages to pursue careers in robotics and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Learn more here.

How to celebrate:

• Learn about careers in robotics and STEM and maybe consider becoming a robot repairman!
• Play with a Robotics Kit and get building, exploring and learning.

World Creativity and Innovation Day ~ April 21

This holiday falls six days after Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday. One of the greatest innovators in our history. The goal of World Creativity and Innovation Day is to encourage creative multidisciplinary thinking to help us achieve a sustainable future.

We love this particular holiday because it highlights something we truly believe in fostering in all children. Creativity and innovation come from passionate curiosity and a love of learning. This is one holiday we need to embrace!

Celebrate the holiday by:

• Do some da Vinci inspired activities and start thinking like a great scientist.
• Keep a journal for the day and record all your creative, innovative, problem solving ideas. Work with classmates to see which ideas you could work together to make bring to reality. How can you become the change makers we need?
• Unlock our Elizabethan Era Scientists notebooking pages and learn about how some of the greatest minds in history created and innovated resulting in discoveries that altered the course of our world.

Earth Day ~ April 22

Earth Day is an event held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now celebrated in more than 193 countries each year.

How to celebrate:

• Earth day is a great day for some Earth inspired activities. Check out our favourite Earth Day activities here.
• Get outside and clean up your little corner of our Earth.
• Go green and turn off lights and conserve water all day long.

World Laboratory Day ~ April 23

A holiday to celebrate where all the scientific magic happens, the laboratory!

Celebrate this holiday by:

• Setting up your very own kitchen laboratory and performing some kitchen science. Don’t forget the lab coat, beakers and test tubes!
• Conduct your very own scientific investigation, just like they do in professional laboratories, with your own Water Lab.

National Inventors Month ~ May

This month long event celebrating innovation and creativity, was created in 1998 by the United Inventors Association of the USA, the Academy of Applied Science, and Inventors’ Digest magazine.

How to celebrate it:

• Create your own invention! Think of a problem, it can be anything, and brainstorm your very own invention to solve the problem. Create a presentation to share your invention with the world.
• Check out some STEM Shows from our top picks list and discuss the work of inventors featured in the shows.

Space Day – May 1

Space Day is dedicated to celebrating the vast and mysterious space that surrounds our blue marble planet. For many, space is a source of intense wonder and fuels curiosities and imaginations.

Celebrate Space Day by:

• Visiting your local science museum or observatory and get a close up look at space through some powerful telescopes.
• Visit the NASA website and dive down the rabbit hole of fascinating information all about space.
• Get hands on with your space lessons with our favourite Space Activities.

Theory of General Relativity ~ May 11, 1916

On this date we celebrate the anniversary of Albert Einstein presenting his Theory of General Relativity before the Prussian Academy of Sciences.

How you can celebrate:

• Listen to Doctor Who’s David Tennant explain the Theory of General Relativity
• Complete the unit on Einstein in our Famous STEAMists workbook.
• Build a compass. Einstein was passionate about studying invisible forces after playing with a compass as a child.

National Numeracy Day ~ May 13

National Numeracy Day is about spreading the belief that “We are all numbers people.”

This day is all about recognising that numbers play a big part in all our lives and helping people sharpen their skills and build their confidence. Being better with numbers isn’t a special talent, it’s something we can all learn.

Celebrate this day by playing with numbers!

• Sign up and learn more about what is happening with your community.
• Do some work in the kitchen and practice those math skills. Bake some bread or try your hand at some candy science and get working on those numbers in a real life way.

World Milk Day ~ June 1

Wondering why we would include World Milk Day in our STEM holiday round up? Well we have done some incredible experiments using milk! What better way to celebrate this holiday than with some science experiments?

• Play with some Magic Milk and watch those colours explode and dance like magic!
• Make plastic from milk. Yes, you really can and it is incredibly easy. Give it a try, you will be amazed!

Women in Engineering Day ~ June 23

You don’t need to be a woman to celebrate Women in Engineering Day! This is a chance to celebrate this profession and learn all about what it takes to be an engineer.

How to celebrate:

• Pick a woman in engineering and learn about her work.
• Try a mechanical engineering challenge.
• Discover some Engineering Activities for Kids and pick the perfect one to celebrate this holiday.
• Engineer one of our favourite projects – a Craft Stick Launcher.
