One of the greatest challenges faced by educators, schools, teachers and homeschoolers is funding. Finding the money to pay for resources and supplies is a constant struggle for these groups. Since we have a large educator base to our readership here at STEAM Powered Family, it should come as no surprise that I’m often asked for unique fundraising ideas for schools and teachers. Suggestions that will take the funding challenge out of the picture so they can focus on what’s important, educating children. Today I’ve got an idea that might seem a little wild and crazy, but stick with me and I hope you will see the power of this concept and how it could change everything.
How much do you need from your fundraising programs to pay for all the amazing STEM and STEAM learning you would love to do with your groups? $200? $500? $1000? $5000? More?
What if you could set up a program that provided a monthly funding source for your programs? What if that program also gave you the opportunity to communicate and inform the families you are serving? What if it allowed you to build relationships and connections that promoted positive learning environments both in school and at home?
It is possible. It isn’t a quick and dirty solution like selling pizza, cookies, popcorn or other trinkets, but those are also not sustainable, steady funding sources. It will take some work and coordination, but it is absolutely possible.
What if I told you it was as simple as what you are looking at right now? That’s right, blogging.
Now I’m not talking about those online journals your cousin made to document her wedding preparations, or the blog your sister started to share pictures of her babies. This is different. This is the world of professional blogging and it is a powerful, untapped resource for many schools and educators.
Did you know in the first month I started this site I made over $50? That was with no audience, no followers. Nothing. I published a handful of articles and under the guidance and mentorship of a professional blogger friend, I immediately started to see returns.
And that $50? It’s grown every month and I now make over four figures every month. I’m not the only one. Want to see some proof? Google “blogger income reports”, the numbers will shock you.
So what does this mean for schools and educators needing funding?
Here’s the thing, I know you are busy, you don’t have time to start a whole business to generate income like those big bloggers do. But you have a super power many of these bloggers didn’t have when they started out.
You have a captivated, engaged, and supportive audience, the families of your children.
An audience that is engaged and passionate is important to blog success and you already have that!
Many of the ways bloggers make money cost readers nothing. One of the most important ways is called affiliate marketing.
The concept of affiliate marketing is simple. You write about products that you believe in. You share what challenges you believe they will solve, then you provide a special link to that product and if someone clicks that link and purchases the product, you get a commission on the sale.
Commissions range from 5% to 50% and some go even higher. Do you see the power of this? The opportunity schools have as leaders in children’s education and growth to tap into this as a funding source?
Unique fundraising ideas for schools and educators that offer the power of community and connection.
What if you set up a school blog, this can be done very inexpensively, which I will get to in a moment.
Then the teachers write short articles. It could be about what they are teaching right now and only takes a short amount of time to write. 300 to 500 words is all that is needed.
Perhaps a grade one teacher is focused on handwriting at the moment with her class. That teacher writes an article about how they are teaching handwriting and in that article they provide links to tools, books, resources and activities the parents can do to support handwriting development in their child. There is no obligation, but if parents click those links and make a purchase, you get a commission and it costs the parents nothing.
The parents are informed about their child’s learning, they feel engaged and you are making some money from their purchases. Your school becomes a community of informed, vibrant members who feel involved and want to contribute.
When my children were in school I would have LOVED this. Often I was told about resources or books by the teacher during hurried hallway conversations during pick up time. It was insanity and hard for me to remember. I would have loved something I could reference from the quiet of my home. And if it supported the educational programs at the school at no cost to me? Even better.
What about a science teacher? They could share books, STEM kits and other cool resources they are using in the classroom or that would be a lot of fun for kids to do at home.
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel either. In future years you can update those articles, and republish them to that years families.
Every little bit adds up. It costs families nothing and they can even promote the articles to their friends and family, encouraging them to click on your links before shopping. Soon all those little commissions start adding up and you can be making hundreds and even thousands of dollars a month in affiliate income.
On top of that, as a school, you could sell advertising spots on your blog. This would provide you with an opportunity to promote your community partners to families and provides yet another income stream.
What about homeschool families?
But what if you are a homeschooler struggling to pay for your children’s resources and materials? You can absolutely start a blog and document what tools, resources and activities you are doing.
There is a vibrant and thriving community of blogging homeschoolers that are doing exactly that, and earning an income from home. Not only that, but curriculum companies will send you free educational resources in exchange for a review on your blog. Some will even pay you as well.
Homeschool blogging is an amazing opportunity if you love to write and want a side job from home.
