10 Reasons To Read Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Books

My oldest on is a voracious reader and has many book series that he re-reads over and over again. One series he really loves is Diary of a Wimpy Kid. So I asked him if he would like to share his thoughts on the books with the STEAM Powered Family readers. He loved the idea of talking about his love for this series, so here is his list of 10 Reasons To Read The Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Books.

10 reasons why every kid should read the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. From a 10 year old fan!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links

Hey everyone, I started reading the Diary of a Wimpy Kid (DoaWK) books a few years ago when I was just 7 years old. Now that I’m 10 years old, I still love the books and look forward to new releases from Jeff Kinney every year. I enjoy these books so much I wanted to tell you my top 10 reasons why I think every kid should read the Wimpy Kid series.

Top 10 Reasons Every Kid Should Read the DOAWK Books

REASON #1

It’s really funny. Even when I reread sections I still find them funny every time I read them.

REASON #2

It seems like its actually a 12 year old’s diary. The way it’s written with the text and pictures is just like someone would write in the diary.

REASON #3

The way Jeff Kinney draws people is interesting. I don’t know why he does it, but he draws them with round heads and missing fingers. It’s weird but fun.

REASON #4

The main character is named Greg Heffley, he is hilarious and my favourite. Fregley is this crazy kid who lives across the street and I’m always shocked at what he does. It’s funny but always strange when he’s around. Greg’s best friend Rowley is also one of my favourites, but he’s not as smart as Greg, but he makes up for it with enthusiasm.

REASON #5

Greg’s not very attractive and has a hard time getting a date at the middle school dances. It’s so real!

REASON #6

My personal favorites are Cabin Fever, The Third Wheel, The Long Haul and Dog Days.

REASON #7

There are movies inspired by the books and they are pretty good too. I prefer the books, but the movies are definitely worth seeing. There are movies available for Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Roderick Rules and Dog Days.

REASON #8

I’m not in middle school yet, but I think it kinda shows you what to expect from middle school.

REASON #9

There are currently 12 books in the series. Lots of stuff to read.

REASON #10

In November 2017 a new one called Getaway was released. This was book 12 in the series and Jeff Kinney has said he will continue writing. I’m hoping that means another one next year too!
So that’s my list of ten reasons I think every kid should read DoaWK books! If you are looking for a great series for kids to read, this is a fun and interesting one to pick. It’s also not too hard, so even if you struggle to read, you will really enjoy these books.

Happy reading!

For the parents

As a mom one of my greatest hopes is to raise a child who loves to read. With a love of reading a person can learn almost anything. It is almost like a superpower that can be carried throughout your life and used as needed.

My son is now a prolific reader and I am constantly amazed at how much information he retains and gleans from his books. Although DoaWK may not be considered the height of literature, or educational, it is fun. Plain and simple. They are a really fun read that had my son devouring the pages, giggling and laughing throughout his literary journey.

Instilling a love of reading doesn’t need to be a challenge. The first step is finding the right story to capture your young reader. The Wimpy Kid series provided that to my son and I believe it can provide that love for many children. But even if it doesn’t, don’t give up. The right books are out there. (See the bottom of this article for links to more articles on books for your children.)

This series was one of the first that my boy truly fell in love with and the great gift it gave him was a love of reading.

So thank you Jeff Kinney for your writing talents, lack of artistic talents (that had my son in stitches whenever he was reading), your sense of humor, and most of all your love of children and raising readers. Thank you!
