The Sphero BB-8 droid is one of the coolest and most adorable toys I’ve ever seen and when I had the chance to snag one on the first day they came out, I jumped at the chance. When it arrived the kids were so excited to start playing. So I figured why not let the kids do their own review of BB-8? I simply recorded all their thoughts while they played and explored. So here it is, two boys testing out the new Sphero BB-8 droid from Sphero, Disney and Star Wars!

The packaging for BB-8 was pretty epic. Lots of fun taking apart the box and seeing all the cool pictures and information on our new robot.
He was quite heavy when we took him out of the box, heavier than we expected, and it took a minute to figure out how to get the magnet to keep his head on, but he was super cute once he was all together.
We plugged him in to start him charging. There is a blue light on the base that flashes to show he is charging. Once it becomes solid blue he is charged.
He came out of the box with a charge so we pulled out our devices, downloaded the app and tried to connect. It kept getting stuck on “initializing” with a Galaxy Note 3. So we tried a Nexus 7. It got stuck a few times but eventually it connected and started a firmware update! We checked with the people at Sphero and they said there are some issues with Androids but they are working on an app update to correct the issue. Since the first day we haven’t had any issues connecting the Nexus to BB-8.
The update took forever. So slow. We joked that BB-8 is a good teacher of patience.
But then we had life! His little head started bopping around and he was ready to go.
It was time to start playing!
The app was really easy to use. There is a blue light you use to calibrate so BB-8 knows where you are located in relation to it for the steering. Since it’s a ball there isn’t a front and back! So each time you play with him you need to calibrate, but it’s really fast and easy. In addition to driving him around there are some fun things like making him laugh, say yes/no, do a little dance, move in patterns and more. You can also set him to patrol around an area on his own.
He is so adorable! Like a cute little buddy who loves to play, laugh, dance and race around.
Immediately we started playing games with him. It was kind of like having a new puppy to play with.
It says it comes with voice activation but we don’t know how that works at this point and I think that might be one of the things it can’t do with Android at this moment. That didn’t stop us though. Instead one person would control him and decide how to make him respond. It was lots of fun!
He had no problem going across hardwood, tile or carpet. We tested him across all surfaces and never had an issue (see the video for a sample of him transitioning from hardwood to carpet). If he is on patrol and bumps into something he looks up at the item, like he’s wondering how it got there, before changing his route and trying a new direction. He seemed to handle bumping into things with no problems. BB-8 himself doesn’t make any noises, the smart device running the app makes the noises. He flashes red when his battery is low and then you just set him on the charger. Super easy.
You can also create your own holographic messages that you view by aiming your device at BB-8. It’s really cool.
Overall this is a really amazing droid and will fit in really well with our robot collection. We all were able to use him and control him with no issues. So if you are old enough to use a smart device you can control him.
This is our first Sphero item and now we are really interested in trying the Sphero SPRK so we can do some programming and customizing. Their technology seems really cool. They definitely did a great job with BB-8.
This is a toy adults and kids will love playing with and we can’t wait to see BB-8 in the upcoming new Star Wars movie.
A big thumbs up! We love our BB-8!
