As the holidays draw near I am often looking for fun projects the kids can do with minimal assistance. To be successful it also needs to be something they will enjoy doing, have fun with, and will be proud and excited by the results. Perhaps even asking to do more!

This 3D Paper Ornament project is exactly that! It’s an easy, fun paper engineering with a festive twist that kids will love.

STEAM Christmas Lesson

We love sneaking some STEAM into our holiday lessons. In this lesson we are incorporating art with our colouring. Math as we learn and work with cubes and three dimensional perspectives. Plus engineering as we build our ornament with paper.

This type of project is an excellent way to introduce STEAM concepts to younger students. Plus using paper STEM projects is incredibly budget friendly.

    STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS

Start by printing out your ornaments. If you are able to print on card stock paper the ornaments will be more durable but any paper will do. We used just regular paper as that was what we had on hand.

Using your crayons, pencils or markers, colour your ornaments to make them uniquely yours and special.

Cut out the design following the outer edge.

Fold in the tabs, then fold along each line. Be sure to make nice creases. This will give you nice corners and lines for your cube ornament.

Cut a length of ribbon to be used as the loop to hang it on the tree. I usually use 5 to 6 inches of ribbon. Adjust the length to get your preferred loop size.

Tie a knot to create a loop with your ribbon. Using glue attach it to the inside top edge of the ornament. Add a bit of tape as well to secure it well.

Apply glue to the tabs, then lift the sides to build your cube shape. Pinch along the glued edges to secure them.

To provide more stability, add a bit of tape to the edges.

Voila! Your gorgeous 3D Paper DIY Christmas Ornaments are complete.

    Happy Holidays!
